Zelensky Suggests Neutral Country ‘Like Kazakhstan’ for Putin Meeting

Speaking to Fox News on September 23, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky reiterated his willingness to meet with Vladimir Putin in a neutral country, either in Europe or further afield in Turkey or Kazakhstan.

Following his appearance at the UN General Assembly earlier that day, Zelensky said that his administration, as well as international leaders like US President Donald Trump and French President Emmanuel Macron had made similar proposals to the Kremlin.

“All of our teams proposed meeting in Turkey, Saudi Arabia, Qatar; in Europe, neutral [countries] like Austria or Switzerland. Even if you want somewhere like Kazakhstan, we’re ready,” Zelensky said.

Earlier this week, Zelensky met with Kazakhstan’s President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev in New York, where the two leaders discussed issues of “bilateral economic and humanitarian cooperation,” according to Kazakhstan’s presidential press office.

While meeting Zelensky, Tokayev emphasized that “amid an extremely difficult situation” it was vital to “continue diplomatic work in order to find a way to end the conflict” in Ukraine.

The two leaders previously spoke by phone in August, with Tokayev expressing his support for achieving “a lasting peace” based on the principles of international law.

“All parties should be guided by the wisdom that ‘a bad peace is better than a good war’,” Tokayev said at the time.
